Happy 2007!

It's another new year and can you believe we are already seven years removed from the turn of the millennium?

I remember ringing in the new year of 2000 at a Tragically Hip concert as if it were just last year. The once so talked about Y2K worries are now nothing but a comedic footnote and potential material for one of Rick Green's wacky sketches on human history.

We are racing ever closer toward a new decade - 2010 - and a new space odyssey with new ambitions to colonize the moon and maybe Mars in the not too distant future.

As for new hopes, this unusually warm winter (outside of Denver at least) may mark the turning point in a renewed focus on the environment. The movements of the minority government toward the centre here in Canada and the reclamation of both congressional houses by Democrats in the US may mean a kinder, gentler government on both sides of the border for the new year. And the signing/extension of Frank Thomas and Vernon Wells may push the beloved Blue Jays back to the land of the playoffs.

So have a happy 2007 and let's make it a good one!
